    Anthurium Inspiration Weeks

Just like previous year, Claudia Broch (Anthurium Info) organised the Anthurium Inspiration Weeks together with Edwin Chrispijn and Manon Poot (Royal Flora Holland). It was a wonderful opportunity to highlight this beautiful product together with them.

The FloraPodium received 24 beautiful Anthurium cultivars, originating from multiple breeders. We gladly made use of those flowers!

Our thanks to the following breeders:

Van Velden, De Vrij and Peelen

    Xanthu:

    Hubers, Wijnen, Leeuwen en Stolk

    Anthogether

Bouwman, Adrichem, Evanty, Oosterzon en Spekflowers

    Exotic beauty

The Anthurium is a tropical flower with a very long vase/shelf life of three weeks. The flowers can be recognized due to their shine, colourful bracts and curious ear are available in several sizes and versions. The name Anthurium (also known as flamingo flower) is derived from the Greek ''Anthos'' and ''Oura'', which means tailflower. The Anthurium grows a bracts and an ear which contains the flowers. This is also where the name tailflower originates from.

    Cold tolerance

One of the first ''rules'' florists get taught about the Anthurium is that the flower is has no or a very low cold tolerance. For florists who work with a cold storage, this is not always very practical. It definitely is not practical if Anthuriums are incorporated in mixed bouquets. Also during transport of the Anthuriums, the temperature has to be taken into account.

Previous year, a lot of new Anthurium cultivars have been bred and a lot of money has been invested in research of the cold tolerance of different Anthurium cultivars. In the meantime several cultivars have been bred of which can be said with certainty that the flowers will keep their quality if they are transported in low temperatures or stay in the cold storage for a few days. This is of course a fantastic development! This can make a large difference during the transportation in cold days or in shops!

Tips for taking care of the Anthurium

Anthuriums have a vase life of 2-3 weeks and are easy to maintain. Because of their strong and large stem they do not need a lot of attention to look long and beautiful. However, there are a few nourishment tips and tricks to enjoy the Anthuriums a little longer:

Remove all package material and rubber bands and shorten the stems a few centimetres by cutting the stem at an angle.

Anthurium flowers are very clean and keep the water clear. They do not need additional flower food, but they do bear it.

Place the flowers somewhere in the light, but not in direct sunlight.

Replace the water once a week and cut the stem another centimetre before you place the flowers back in the vase. This increases the vase life of the flowers.
