Valentine Special
Valentine's Day is on February 14th. A day that is celebrated worldwide and that revolves around love; a day where lovers surprise each other with the most beautiful flowers.
Flowers have been used for centuries to express love. For the romantics among us, roses are still the most popular Valentine’s Day’s flowers. The rose, and in particular the red rose, is a symbol of love.
Rose test
Every year, a few weeks before the Valentine's period, we have a number of red rose varieties tested in the independent testing center of Royal Flora Holland. Our buyer Rob selects a number of well-known varieties of red roses from our most important growers from Ecuador, Kenya and the Netherlands in order to get a good impression of the quality of these roses. In general we can say that the quality is much better than 5 or 6 years ago at this time of year.
As a company we can therefore vouch for the quality of the roses that we sell to our customers. However, the test clearly showed that the roses with cut flower food lasted longer and opened better.
Test students Wellant College
We also did our own rose test together with a student group from the Wellant College in Rijnsburg. The students wanted to test the quality of three types of roses in the same color but from different countries.
Our buyer Rob selected three types of orange roses.
Rosa "Copacabana" from Kenya
Rosa "Free Spirit" from Ecuador
Rosa "Clarence" from the Netherlands
We put one half of each bunch in a clean vase with only fresh water. The other half of the bunch was put in a vase with fresh water with cut flower food.
In the end it turned out that the different varieties were comparable with regards to vase life.
But it soon became apparent that the roses with cut flower food opened much better and remained beautiful for much longer. The water of the roses without cut flower food was much more turbid.

Day 6
The buds of "Copacabana" without food are all hanging. The roses with flowerfood are all beautiful. "Free Spirit" with flowerfood has opened very nicely. Most without flowerfood as well, but not all. "Clarence" with flowerfood looks nice, the buds are hard. The bus of the vase without flowerfood are soft and limp.
