The tulip (Tulipa) is a genus of the monocotyledonous plants of the lily family (Liliaceae). In the 16th century the tulip was introduced from Turkey.

In the wild the tulips are found in North Africa and Southern Europe and Northwest China. The largest numbers and different species grow in the mountain ranges of Central Asia. Here the winters are very cold, the springs are long and there is a dry summer. The most ideal conditions for tulips.

Tulips are often transported and delivered without water. So we recommend you first put the tulips still wrapped in paper in a container with water and leave them for an hour. Fill the vase with hand warm water.

Tulips don’t like sun and heat, that’s why it’s better to place them in a cool and shady spot.

Also, avoid ripening fruit near the tulips . As with all other flowers, the ethylene gas produced by ripening fruit will make the tulip age faster.

M.M. Duin Bearflowers is located in Heemskerk, where they breed different varieties of tulips on about 4 hectares of land. To tell the traditional story, the tulips have been marketed under the name ‘Traditional Tulips by M.M. Duin’ for a few years now. Tulips with a story.

The pursuit of good quality is top priority at M.M. Dune Bearflowers. In addition to the passed on expertise of the previous generations, they also use the purity of nature.

Each bulb planted by hand in the ground, every flower harvested with feeling. Craftsmanship.

In October, the bulbs are planted in the open ground. Because they are in the ground, the bulb gets the time to develop and unfold in the traditional way, with all natural elements, in the nutritious natural sandy soil.

This traditional way of growing nowadays only occurs on a small scale.

To be able to respond to the market and to be able to produce in a time-oriented manner, roll-on greenhouses are used. These are large glass greenhouses, which are pulled in the right place by means of a rail system. The greenhouse is then heated and after about 3.5 weeks the tulips can be pulled.

After the tulips have been harvested, the bulb is removed, the tulips are bundled and packed to go to the auction.

The removed bulbs go into storage in a storage cell and are planted again in October, but not for production in the following year. The bulbs grow again in the ground until they are in bloom, after which the heads are removed with a large mower. This way all energy goes to the bulb and not to the flower. In June, these headed tulips are harvested. The bulb is cleared from the ground and prepared to be planted again in October. This round again for the production!
