Mistletoe
In the romantic period around Christmas there is a lot of demand in the flower shops for the famous Mistletoe. According to the old tradition you hang the Mistletoe branch on the door, under which you can kiss your loved one. This brings good luck. A tradition that we have been honoring for many years. Why do we follow this tradition? And where does the Mistletoe actually come from?
The Mistletoe is a plant that has been featured in folk tales and fairy tales for hundreds of years. The plant is a semi-parasite. It grows high in the trees, in lime-rich area. It supplies itself with water and salts from the tree, without disturbing the host trees. You cannot just grow the beautiful full-bodied shrub in the garden. The Latin name of the product is Viscum album. This evergreen plant forms white, berry-like fruits that birds like to eat. The seeds stick to the tree through the sticky layer. A new Mistletoe shrub grows here!
The Christmas tradition to hang up Mistletoe with Christmas comes from the Celts and Germans. Among them the Mistletoe was a sacred plant that stood for fertility. The plant played an important role in their fertility rituals. Mistletoe is now primarily a symbol of peace and love. The original idea of kissing each other under the branch is derived from a Scandinavian custom. When enemies met under Mistletoe in the forest, they had to lay down their weapons and hold a truce for a day.
The ultimate tradition as we know it today began in Great Britain. The original practice was to pick a berry from the Mistletoe twig before you were allowed to kiss the other. If all the berries were gone, then no more kissing was allowed.
