    Narcissus

    from grower W.F. Leenen

W.F. Leenen is a true family business that is run by the enthusiastic brothers Dirk and Jaco. They have taken over the company, which was founded by their grandfather, from their passionate father.

    Quality above quantity!

The brothers prefer to grow small quantities of each variety, so that there is a large product range on the market, however on a small scale. Breeding daffodils is also part of the business. It is important to know that breeding a daffodil takes about 25 years. It takes a long time to grow a bulb from a seed that flowers and is of good quality. That is why only about two new types of daffodils come onto the market every year.

    Shells

One of the special aspects of the way they grow at W.F. Leenen is that the daffodils are grown on a shell substrate instead of in soil. The germinated roots anchor themselves more easily in this substrate. This way of growing is clean, because no soil sticks to the stems and the soil will not need to be disinfected. In addition, they can heat at lower temperatures due to the use of shells. An additional advantage is that it is better for the environment. They can recycle almost all waste, leaving little to be disposed of.

    Paradise

Jaco and his father brought a number of beautiful varieties from their range for the FloraPodium, where they talked enthusiastically about the Paradise. A very nice line of double daffodils that all come from their own breeding.

    Sheaf

The Sheaf daffodil is also unique and very decorative. This is a bunch of daffodils with the bulb and roots still attached. Due to the amount of nutrition in the bulb, these daffodils will bloom for at least two weeks. The roots do need a little bit of moisture. You can decorate them beautifully in a vase with a layer of water, but what also would work well is putting them on a flat dish with some damp moss. This fun concept can actually be done with all types of short-stemmed daffodils.

    Chinese New Year

In China, the daffodil is extremely popular during the Chinese New Year. Jaco's father talked about his unforgettable trip to China and the "Chinese sacred Lily", as they call this special daffodil in China. In an area of 500/600 hectares, these Tazetta daffodils are specially grown for this holiday. In China, every year symbolizes an animal. The Chinese sacred daffodils are processed in the shape of that animal and packed in different colored boxes. Each color marks the area where the boxes should be taken.

    Origin

The ’holy’ daffodil originally comes from Turkey, where this species (similar to the modern Avalanche) grew in the wild. Merchants from Venice took the daffodil along the Silk Road to China for the medicinal properties attributed to the flower. As a result, it is possible that you find the daffodil in the wild in many different places in the world. Its medicinal properties earned the narcissus the title "holy".
