Grower van der Ende introduced a new type of snapdragon this year; and not just any new variety. This year they grew the Antirrhinum butterfly, a snapdragon with a full double flower, experimental and another ‘workingname’. Martijn van der Ende told us more about it.

The main cultivation of Van der Ende is the amaryllis, a product that is really seasonal. In the months that they do not supply Amaryllis, the company produces Antirrhinum, better known as snapdragon. This year they have a double in the range for the first time; the Antirrhinum Butterfly, in the color pink and white. Very small, available for a short time and actually intended more as an experiment to see how the product is received by the market.

Martijn was very enthusiastic about the product. He likes to do something different from the crowd. Not only with the Amaryllis cultivation, but also with the snapdragon. They would like to grow exclusive products for the florist so that they can continue to distinguish themselves.

Tim Grosscurt is product manager of cut flowers at the Japanese breeder Sakata, who has bred the Butterfly. He also talks very enthusiastically about the Butterfly. “The product is completely new, there is nothing comparable in the market yet. It really is a high end product with a nice length of at least 80 cm. This is a great length for processing in large arrangements or beautiful field bouquets. ” It really is a niche product, suitable for the higher segment.

Although it is no longer available at this time, we would like to show this to the market. Tim says that this year was kind of an introductory year. The product has great potential, next year we will very likely see more and the white and pink version will be available in larger numbers!
